Notes

I discovered Artie Belle somewhat accidentally. I have been using Texas Death Certificates to research Shook families in Texas. Sometimes I'll find an individual that is within my family tree. More often, the individual is unrelated. Either way, this has been a particularly useful method to identify females that have changed names. Artie stumped me for quite some time, as her father was only identified as "Bud" Shook. No mother was identified. Driving home from work one day, I started thinking about Bud Shook. I had never heard of a Bud Shook. Then I thought about a Buddy Shook. My great-great grandfather, Theodrick Shook, was possibly a Buddy Shook. I have never been sure about that, as the only reference for "Buddy" was a photocopy of a family data sheet for Josiah Shook that recorded Theodrick as Buddy. With that thought, I started looking at Theodrick's family a bit more. I had an Artie recorded as a placehold from someone's Shook family tree on Ancestry.com. I had no idea whether Artie was male or female, and for years I have assumed Artie was male. Once I started piecing Artie's profile together, however, things began snapping into place. In the 1920 census, Pearl and Oliver Whitney are recorded as the grandsons of Mary Honora (Furr) Shook Charpiot. That is probably the most best evidence tying Artie to Mary and Theodrick. The connection to the Etie family is also a strong tie, as Artie's sister, Ada, married an Etie.
