Story
Thomas Augusta Sanders was born in Alabama in 1835. Amanda Evelena Collier was born in 1839, also in Alabama. Early in life this couple heeded the advise of the day: "Go West, Young Man." After traveling to Texas they got married in Montgomery County. Their first child, Thomas Augusta II, was born January 15, 1857. Less than two years later Amanda (Evelena as she was known), was expecting a second child when Thomas Augusta was killed in a bar-room brawl, leaving Evelena a widow at age 19 with a small boy and another child on the way.
Notes
The above story is a good starting point, but it is a bit inconsistent with some of the facts. The birthplace of Thomas seems to be Mississipi (rather than Alabama). In the 1850 U.S. Census for Mississipi, Thomas records his birthplace as Mississippi, and later both of his sons, Thomas (ii) and Lloyd, also record their father's birthplace as Mississippi.
In the 1850 U.S. Census for Mississipi, Thomas Augusta Sanders is recorded living with his uncle, William Selman Lloyd. He was 17 years old at that time. Placing his birth around 1833. Given that Thomas is not mentioned in the Last Will and Testament in 11-MAR-1833, Thomas was probably born sometime between 1833 - 1834 in Copiah County, Mississippi and was still living in Mississippi in 1850 before immigrating to Texas sometime between 1850 and 1855 (when he got married to Evelina).
Thomas Augusta Sander's uncle, William Franklin Sanders, married Mary Elizabeth Worsham in Montgomery County, Texas in 1853. Wheter Thomas (i) got to Montgomery County, Texas first or not is unknown, but he at least had some family in the Montgomery County, Texas area by the time he married Evelena. There are also stories on Ancestry.com that Thomas Augusta Sander's father, Thomas Sanders / Saunders immigrated to Texas and then went back to Mississippi.
