Family Line

John Oliver Shook, Sr.

The John Oliver Family immigrated from Mississippi to Texas sometime during 1852 to 1855, based on census records (with Tom H. Shook being born in Mississippi about 1852 and Wilbur F. Shook born in Texas in 1855). John Oliver was a newspaper man in Waco. He was only about 41 years old when he was murdered, leaving Mary with a household of teenagers, young children, and little John Oliver Jr. being born about a month or so old after his father's death. So far in my research, I have not been able to tie John Oliver Sr. to any other Shook families.

Marriage

06-OCT-1842 in Rankin County, Mississippi to Mary A. CRAWFORD; born: ~1824 in Alabama (or Mississippi); died: After 1905.

Story

From Some Notable Persons in First Street Cemetery of Waco, Texas, compiled by T. Bradford Willis, DDS, MSD:

John Oliver Shook, ca. 1819-1860. A native of Tennessee. Husband of Mary A. Crawford Shook. The John Oliver Shook family was living in Rankin County, Mississippi in 1850, and they moved to Waco ca. 1854. He was the editor / publisher of two early Waco newspapers: the Democrat and the Brazos Statesman. According to published accounts, he was murdered on October 25, 1860 by one of his printers. (His grave marker was missing at the time of the 1962 cemetery survey.)

This name and information were found in the 1962 survey of Old First Street Cemetery by Mrs. J. L. Staton, Sr. and Mrs. Thos. R. Meredith.

Their cemetery survey was published in 1965 in McLennan County Cemetery Records, Volume I, by the Central Texas Genealogical Society.

Murdered by Thomas McCardell, a printer formerly in his employ.
