Notes (on Jeff)
Jeff was admitted in 1923 to the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas (at about age 65). He must have incurred his injuries in the Spanish-American War (ca. 1898).
The Tennessee death certificate records Jeff D. Shook as having John O. Shook and Mary Cranford [sic] as his father and mother, and a birth date of 18-NOV-1858 in Texas. That ties Jeff D. to John Oliver Shook and Mary A. Crawford quite well. Jeff G. [sic] in the 1880 census places Jeff D. Shook's birth place in McLennan County, Texas. In the 1880 census, J. D. Shook is found in neighboring Bell County married to Fannie. While her maiden name is not evident, assuming she is Fannie Marian Matlock her death certificate records her birth place as Texas, her father's birth place as Arkansas, and her mother's birth place as Missouri. These birth places are consistent for all of Fannie's census records. Unfortunately, the next census record is in 1900 (two decades later), and it looks like an awful lot happened during that time.
In addition to children being born, Jeff D. served in the Spanish-American War (ca. 1898) and appears to have been injured. How bad is unknown, but apparently Fannie left Jeff D. and married Hugh Aaron Austin. Starting with the 1900 census, Fannie appears in all census records (1910 - 1930), which leaves a clear trail until her death in 1935. Jeff D., on the other hand, disappears until at least 1920. In that census record, he shows up with 3 sons that are hard to tie to Fannie. In fact, the 1920 census may be an entirely different Jeff D. Shook (although his age is right on target). If you ignore the 1920 census (and the complexities it raises), the 1930 census picks up and tracks Jeff D. in Tennessee where is apparently sick and then dies in 1943.
