Story

SHOOK FAMILY

If we look back to the 1930's, we can see Grandpa Shook using his walking stick in order to get around: for he was getting along in years and his eyesight had failed. That didn't bother him too much, though, because he could still listen to "Amos and Andy" on the radio and enjoy the sound of the voices of his six daughters when they gathered around the piano to sing the old hymns.

He had always been known for his religious piety. God and the Methodist Church came first in his life. Maybe that was because he grew up under the influence of a father who was a Methodist circuit rider.

Grandpa Moses Carson Shook, the eldest of the seven children of The Reverend Wiley Anderson Shook and his wife, Mary Witherspoon, had come to Texas from Missouri in 1855. He was only ten years old when the family settled in Sulphur Springs.

In 1868 he married Clara Isabel Goss, the daughter of The Reverend Ephraim Goss and Rebecca Johns Goss, of Rockwall, Texas. They settled in Sulphur Springs where the first ? of their eight children were born.

About ten years later the Shooks, along with several other Sulphur Springs families, decided to move to Terrell. They lived at 703 Johnson Street and M. C., as he was called, worked in various businesses in Terrell including D.M. Purvine Grocery and Anthony Hardware Store.

Of Grandma and Grandma Shook's eight children, two died young: the first child, Millie, and their only son, Pressley Anderson.

Mary Laura, their second born, married ... sity of Tennessee and S.M.U. Miss Willie taught many prominent Texas citizens over the years.

When Leda Oma, the youngest, married Edgar N. Phillips, also of Terrell, everybody said she married him for his good looking rig. Ed loved horses and owned the most handsome horse and buggy in town. Leda was dearly loved by all of her friends and customers who knew her when she worked at McCords and then at Martin-Jarvis department stores. When not working, she could usually be found engaging in her favorite pastime, fishing. She loved to catch fish but refused to eat them, so she gave away everything she caught.

The Shook sisters were all active members of the Methodist Church and the accompanying photograph was taken in 1952 when the First Methodist Church of Terrell had a special dinner in their honor. The sisters are: Top Left to Right: Willie Shook, Nina Shook and Lula Shook Bonner, Bottom Row: Leda Shook Phillips, Kate Shook Hardin and Laura Shook Purvine.
