Notes
Bessie Briscoe was Joe Shook's third wife, and the only mother and grandmother the Shook boys really ever knew.
Bessie was buried in the Cheetham Cemetery in Sheridan, Texas in "a cheap wooden coffin" according to my uncle, Dean Anthony Shook. Just a few family and friends attended the funeral. Dean's perception was that the Joe and Bessie were of limited means. He still remembers using an "outhouse" for the first time at the Briscoe house after the funeral service. When I visited the cemetery in 2005, the death date for Bessie had not been engraved (although a funeral home sign next to the headstone shows her date of death).
