History

Currently, the best historical document about Joseph Webster "Joe" Shook is found in his World War I Draft Registration Card. This card was filled out on 05-JUN-1917, and shows Joe living in Goose Creek, Texas (which later became Baytown). At this time, Joe was 29 years old, widowed with a child, and described himself as short and slender with blue eyes and brown hair. He recorded his birth as 21-JUL-1887 in Marlin, [Falls County,] Texas.

In the 1880 United States Census, Joe's parents, Theodoric and Mary, were in Bell County, Texas. So Joe was born in the county just South of Bell County. However, by the time Joe was 20 years old, he had moved to Southeast Texas where he married Tassie Pate on 7-SEP-1907 in Montgomery County, Texas. Sadly, Tassie died just three years later on 28-MAR-1910, making Joe a widow and a single father at age 23. Just 5 weeks later on 18-APR-1910, Joe and his son, Earl, were recorded on the 1910 United States Census in Montgomery County, Texas. At this time, Joe was recorded as a day laborer in the cattle industry. According to his World War I Draft Registration Card, Joe had moved further south to Goose Creek by 1917. Apparently Joe stayed there until at least 1930, since he was recorded in the 1930 census in Harris County, Texas. In the 1917 draft record, Joe records his occupation as an oil field worker for the San Saba Oil Company in Goose Creek, Texas. His grandchildren (Jan and Dean Shook) remember him working for Humble Oil, which later became Exxon.

Jan Shook, Sr. remembers visiting his grandfather, Joe, in Hempstead, [Waller County,] Texas. However, no evidence of that address has been found. At some point after 1927, Joe moved to Anahuac, Chambers County, Texas where he lived the remainder of his life. Joe died in 1955 from complications relating to a car accident. Oral history says that Joe was driving his son Lloyd to register for the draft when they got in a very bad car accident. Although they both survived the accident and Lloyd lived to tell the tale, Joe died several days later at the Libery County hospital. Joe was buried at the Cheetham Cemetery in Sheridan, Colorado County, Texas (just West of Houston) This is the area his wife Bessie (Briscoe) Shook grew up and where her family is buried. Later in 1986, Bessie was also buried in this cemetery next to Joe.

Notes

Jan Shook, Sr. remembers Joe having a second wife after Tassie and before Bessie. Supposedly, he divorced the second wife because she was cruel to Earl.
