The Bennett Family

The Bennett family is related to the Shook family through the marriage of Lewis Clark Bennett to Rebecca Elizabeth Shook. A (typed) biography in a ring binder of the Bennett family by Lewis Clark Bennett's daughter, Eppie Nora (Bennett) Cole, can be found in the main Mesquite Public Library (Texas). The library also has a book called The Descendents of Hiram Bennett, Pioneer Settler of Dallas County by Inez Moore Bennett. There is a lot of good information in those two sources if you are researching the Bennett family.

An interesting part of Nora's biography relates to Lewis Clark Bennett, who is shown in the 1850 census in Dallas County, Texas as a 17 year old Ranger. The story Ms. Bennett told is that in the performance of his duty as a Ranger, Lewis Clark Bennett shot a man in the back. Whether the shooting was strictly accidental or necessary in the line of duty is undetermined. So he left the Dallas area and went to Harris County, where he married Rebecca Elizabeth Shook. Rebecca died and his sister, Sarah ann (Bennett) Cole, then married to James Madison Cole, took the orphaned children and raised them.
