Arkansas born in 1843, Jacob Shook moved to Lamar County, Texas with his parents by 1850.

His father Daniel & mother Emily (Hoover) Shook were farmers, so he become a farmer. "Jake" returned to Arkansas by 1870 and married his first wife Nettie Hall. Together, they had a son and two daughters. Tragically, Nettie died in 1879 shortly after the birth of their last child / daughter "Nita". And their first child / only son Francis "Frank" died when 18 years old in 1888. Jaunita "Nita" (Shook) Hosmer (1878-1924) lived only to the age of 46. Her burial place is unknown to date. Their oldest daughter, my great-grand mother Lou Emily (Shook) Gregory lived a full and long life of 96 years. At the age of seven, she began riding with her father on the prairie between St. Louis, Missouri and Southeast Texas. He worked as a Teamster for a time after her mother's death. She told vivid stories about their travels. I suspect they were some of her happiest memories. In 1880, Jake re-married Sarah Caroline Dorsey. They were married about 48 years until his death in 1926.
