Notes
"Allen Lee Pate was called "Shug" until he was about 8 years old. While at a store in Tomball, Harris County, Texas, his father was chided for "Shug" not having a proper name. His father's reply was to name him afer the store keeper who was a Mr. Lee. Hence he was named Lee Pate. However, he did like the name and when he got older he renamed himself, Allen Lee Pate, and went by that name until his death."
Curiously, Allen lists his father's state of birth as "unknown" in the 1920 U.S. Census, athough he lists his mother as born in Texas.
