History

In a November, 28, 1999 posting to the Pate message board on Genealogy.com, Gordon Ginn said he had visited Allen Lee Pate's headstone at the Pate Cemetery. The date of that visit was not noted, but the message posting itself is about 3 years older than my Thanksgiving 2002 visit to the cemetery. During that visit, I took notes of a headstone that is probably Allen Lee Pate and Mary Ann (Goodson) Pate. The headstones were very old and in very bad shape. As the dates are very close to Gordon's recollection, I'm assuming the headstones are indeed those of Allen Lee Pate and Mary Ann (Goodson) Pate. For reference, the headstone notes I took are as follows:

• Alleml Pate; b: ?; d: 1910
• Mary Ann Pate; b: 1/22/1870; d: ?/?/1935(?)

Note that "Alleml" is probably "Allen l" or "Allen L" and that his birth date was noted as "unclear". Also note that his death date was recorded as 1910, which is the only major discrepancy between my notes and that of Gordon Ginn. I noted Mary Ann Pate's birth date as 1/22/1870, which differs from 1/22/1879. The ending digit of '0' in 1870 could easily have been a '9' misinterpreted. The death date was almost unreadable.

In the 1890 Montgomery County, Texas Census (compiled by Mary C. Moody), the Andrew Lidden Pate family was recorded as follows:
