Garner Jordan Shook was born in 1868 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to William Henry Shook and Margaret Ann Shields Shook. He was one of 13 children. The family moved to Texas about 1890, and Garner married in 1894 to Maggie Bell Richardson. After moving around to different towns in Texas, they settled in Temple, Texas and lived there until his death in 1940.

Obituary from the Belton Newspaper - Funeral services for G.J. Shook, 71, who died suddenly Saturday afternoon at his home 719 South First Street, will be held Monday at 2 P.M. at the Church of Christ, Seventh Street and Avenue G with J.D. Boren, minister, and R.J. Smith conducting. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery. Pace in charge.

Mr. Shook, born in Tennessee, March 1, 1868, came as a young man to Texas, and had lived in Temple for the past 32 years. In 1894 he married Miss Maggie B. Richardson. He belonged to the Church of Christ.

Survivors are his wife and five children: C. H. Shook of Yorktown, Mrs. R. L. Mershon of Longview, Miss Lonnie Shook, C. L. Shook, and J. D. Shook of Temple; two brothers, Jess Shook of Dallas and Tom Shook of Franklin; two sisters, Mrs. D. H. Richardson of Franklin and Mrs. Thad Collins of Live Oak, Florida; and four grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Guy Baker, Earl Grubbs, Leslie Huff, Bill Kelley, Jack Cox, and George Ferguson. Honorary pallbearers will be friends.
