Obituary (Velma)

Velma Mae Johnston passed away into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. She was 85 years old.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008, in the chapel of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls, with the Rev. Howard Chapman, pastor of Senior Adults of the First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls, officiating. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.

A daughter of the late Jay Martin and Anna (Hamilton) Shook, she was born May 2, 1923, in Wichita Falls. On June 11, 1941, she married Robert (Bob) Johnston in Wichita Falls. Mrs. Johnston was involved at First Assembly of God Church, where she started the Missionette Girls group in the early 1960s. She worked in many areas of her church, including as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Morning Circle Bible Study ladies' group, helped coordinate showers, mentored young women, worked in camps, and Vacation Bible School. She was a faithful prayer warrior. She enjoyed cooking for friends, family and neighbors. She was always ready to help someone in need. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls since 1996. She was also preceded in death by her son, Bobby, in March of 2007.

Survivors include her husband of sixty-seven years, Robert (Bob) Johnston; one daughter, Patricia Johnston; daughter-in-law, Kay Johnston; grandchildren, David Johnston, Matt Johnston, Crystal Johnston; and great-grandson, Gavin Johnston, all of Wichita Falls; three brothers, Dale Shook of Wichita Falls, Ralph Shook of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Clarence Shook of Hastings, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2008, at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
