Obituary (for Lillian Mary)

Lillian Mary Kroeger, 88, of Burnet died Saturday, June 20 at Brackenridge Hospital due to complications resulting from a fall in her home.

Miss Kroeger was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Bellville, Texas, the sixth of eight children and the only daughter of Grace and William Kroeger Sr. She came with her family to Burnet as an infant and graduated from Burnet High School in 1938. After attending Durham-Draughon Business College in Austin, she worked briefly in the Burnet County Courthouse.

In 1941 she joined the staff of the Shepperd Memorial Hospital and Clinic on SH 29 in Burnet. Miss Kroeger was a vital part of the success of the hospital, working closely with Dr. Joe Shepperd to master and perform most of the functions of a working medical clinic and hospital. As the hospital administrator in the 1950s, she guided the facility to achieve state accreditations, the first small hospital in Texas to be awarded that distinction.

Miss Kroeger understood the value of discipline and professionalism in the running of a hospital and instilled those principles into the many young people she mentored in the nursing and medical technical fields.

After leaving Shepperd Memorial in the mid-1960s, Miss Kroeger became an independent hospital consultant. She traveled Texas for a few years, guiding other small hospitals and nursing homes to achieve or regain state accreditation.

She accepted the administrator position at a nursing home in Eldorado, and she lived there until retiring and returning to Burnet in 1985. Miss Kroeger's interest in all aspects of her community, her friends, Epsilon Pi Sorority, her volunteer work and her family knew no bounds. She was known for her cheerfulness, enthusiasm and humor. Her many nieces and nephews will always hold their "Aunt Sissy" in their hearts.

She is survived by two brothers, Allen "Al" Kroeger of Burnet, presently residing in Hamilton, and Lloyd and wife Marie Kroeger of Burnet; sister-in-law, Bertiel Kroeger of Austin; and nieces, Kay Roberts of Gatesville, Joyce Edwinson of Austin, Cheryl Phillips of Lewisville, Cindy Middlebrook of Austin, Debbie Cartwright of Austin, Gayla Kroeger of Beaver Lake, Ark., and Susan Barnett of Burnet. She is also survived by nephews, Charlie Kroeger of Canyon, Howard Kroeger of Belton and Steven Kroeger of Fredericksburg.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at the Clements-Wilcox Chapel in Burnet. Ellen Ely officiated. Interment followed at the Burnet City Cemetery.
