Notes
Emma W. Angle was my Great Grandmother (Jan Joseph Shook, Jr., Jan Joseph Shook, Sr. m. Gail Maxine Patin, Chester James Patin m. Helen May Grogan, George H. Grogan M. Emma W. Angle. My first source for Emma was from Helen May Grogan's birth certificate, which records her mother as Emme W. Angle and father as George H. Grogan. The earliest source for Emma is the 1919 City Directory for Galveston, Texas where Emma and George are listed as "Grogan, Geo H. (Emma) r 805 40th". About a year later, Emma and George then appear in the 1920 U.S Census in Mobile, Alabama with my grandmother, Helen, as an 8-year old child. In 1923, Emma and George appear back in the 1923 City Directory for Port Arthur, Texas listed as "Grogan, George H (Emma) barge capt marine dept Texas Co r226 8th". In 1925, the year after George's death (1924), Emma appears again in the City Directory for Port Arthur, Texas listed as "Grogan, Emma (wid Geo A) nurse r101 9th". In 1927, Emma appears again in the City Directory for Port Arthur, Texas listed as "Grogan, Emma (wid Geo H) nurse h309 8th". So Emma and Georeg appear to be living in Port Arthur between 1923 and 1927. It is interesting that George died in New Orleans.
My grandmother, Helen May (Grogan) Patin believed she was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She also had two sisters who all lived in New Orleans. So Emma and George probably lived in New Orleans for some time. Apparently, they moved around a lot. George died in 1924, and at some point between 1920 and 1930, Helen went to live with her sister Mabel in New Orleans. Why Helen was raised by her sister (who she called "Mama") is unknown. My grandmother went to her death bed without saying why (if she even knew).
