Notes

The first two sons of James and Gabrielle are confusing. One problem is the 1880 census.

The 1880 census records the first son as Wilder (1 years old) and then John (age 3/12 and born in FEB-1880). If you focus on the birth dates, rather than given names, the 1880 census looks like it might have mangled the names of the two boys. John Wilbur "Wilder" Whitney could very well have been recorded as Wilder and then John. Perhaps the enumerator was confused. Perhaps Andrew Jackson Whitney was not named yet (not uncommon). My assumption is that John Wilbur "Wilder" Whitney is the first son and Andrew Jackson Whitney is the second son.

First consider the birth order. John Wibur Whitney (aka Wilder) has a birth date of 25-SEP-1879 on his death certificate and WWI draft card. So that date is consistent. Andrew Jackson Whitney has a birth date of 14-FEB-1875 on his death certificate and 14-FEB-1979 on his draft card. The birth date and month are consistent, but the year is different. The birth year of 1875 is certainly incorrect, since no five or six year old was on the 1880 census. Moreover, if you drop the birth year entirely, the birth month of February ties the 1880 census with the death certificate and WWI draft card. That would place Andrew's date at 14-FEB-1880.

Assuming Andrew Jackson Whitney was born on 14-FEB-1880, the birth date of John Wibur Whitney (aka Wilder) becomes problematic. Gabrielle would have been pregnant with Andrew in September 1879. So John was probably born in 1878. That is inconsistent with the two birth dates on the death certificate and WWI draft card (which John filled out himself), but not inconsistent with the over body of recorded information, which shows a lot of turmoil in the family.
