Story

JOHN L. HANDLY, secretary and treasurer of the Handly-Goodma Wholesale Grocery Company, of Harriman, Tenn., was born near Winchester, Franklin County, Tenn., Feb. 10, 1862, where his father James C. Handly, was a large land owner and before the war owned a considerable number of slaves. He was a native of that county, and died there in 1872, in his sixtieth year. He married Cynthia A. Shook, a daughter of Abraham Shook, a prominent farmer and at one time sheriff of the county. He was also on of the founders of the Goshen Cumberland Presbyterian Church. I Abraham Shook, do hereby make this writing my Last Will and Testment.

ITEM 1: My Executor hereafter named, to sell my lower farm or so much thereof as may be necessary to pay all my debts and he is hereby authorized and empowered to sell the same either publically or privately as he may think best and to make and Execute Titles of the same.

ITEM 2: I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Eliza Ross Shook, wife of O.S. Shook, to her sole and separate use of the following described tract of land, it being a part of the place on which I now live. Beginning at the foot of the mountain, near the upper end of the lane by the orchard and running on a line back of the garden until it gets below the cow shed and four rods NE of the shed thence West to Benj. Elloitt's line thence South with said Elliott's line to the Isaac Gray's fifty acres and with it to the beginning. Also, my horse Celene and one milk cow and my two horse wagon and harness, one Gopher plow, one shovel and the Peacock plow.

ITEM 3: It is my desire and will that the remainder of my land off of the mountain be divided equally between James K. Shook, Cynthia A. Handley, wife of James C. Handley and Sarah, widow of G.A. Shook, dec'd.

ITEM 4: I desire my Executor to sell either pubically or privately, the remainder of my horses and cattle and stock hogs and divide the proceeds between James K. Shook, Sarah Shook, Eliza R. Shook and Cynthia A. Handley.

ITEM 5: I will and desire that my lands on the lands out the mountain be divided equally between James K. Shook, Sarah Shook, Eliza R. Shook and Cynthia A. Handley.

ITEM 6: I hereby appoint my son James K. Shook Executor of this my Will.

ITEM 7: I desire my books divided between J.K. Shook, O.S. Shook, Cynthia A. Handley and Sarah Shook.

In testamony whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand and seal this 4th day of November 1868 in the presence of A.C. Clopton and M.N. Mathews.
